The Sigourney Savages kept their undefeated starts to both the baseball and softball seasons going last night by each defeating Davis County.
While Sigourney baseball cruised to an 18-4 win, Savage softball had its toughest test of the early season, but three runs scored in the first inning would hold up the rest of the way for the second-ranked team in Class 1A, as they held on for a 3-0 victory.
Senior Erin Dawson drove in a pair of those runs in the first and had two hits to lead the Sigourney lineup. Senior pitcher Carly Goodwin allowed five hits but nothing else in a complete-game effort, piling up 14 strikeouts.
The Savages go to 3-0 on the softball diamond while Sigourney baseball is now 4-0. Both teams return to action tonight at conference rival Iowa Valley.
Meanwhile, the Keota Eagles were on the wrong side of a pair of contests last night at Belle Plaine. Eagle baseball had a 5-3 lead through six innings but saw the Plainsmen tie the game in the bottom of the seventh and walk off in the eighth for a 6-5, extra-innings victory.
Keota softball cut an early 6-0 deficit in half in the top of the third inning but allowed nine runs in the bottom half on their way to a 15-3 loss. While the Eagles are still winless on the softball diamond, baseball is now 1-3. Both Keota teams play again tonight against English Valleys.
