A memorable experience was slightly soured for Winfield-Mt. Union baseball Wednesday night. The Wolves took to the Field of Dreams movie site for their contest with Burlington Notre Dame, but fell to the Nikes 12-0 in 6 innings.

Senior Cael Phillips kept the Wolves in it with his early work on the mound. Facing one of the best offenses in the State, he allowed just four runs and one extra base hit through the first three innings. The Nikes were able to break through in the fourth, however, boosting their lead to eight. Another four-run inning in the sixth provided the knockout punch. Burlington Notre Dame saw four players with two hits, including Spencer Brent and Caden Schwenker who drove in seven combined runs.

Schwenker was one of three Nike pitchers that caused fits for the Winfield-Mt. Union offense. The Wolves two hits came from Riley Kaalberg and Lane Genkinger and their first runner in scoring position came in the fifth. Phillips and Nick Sparrow each drew a walk, while Kohlby Newsom reached in the final frame on a fielder’s choice. In the field, WMU utilized freshman pitcher Parker Wilson and sophomore Gavin Prior in relief.

The Wolves will return to the diamond on Friday and take their best shot at Louisa-Muscatine. The game was heard on the KCII3 Stream, which follows Winfield-Mt. Union softball to Wayland tonight for a date with WACO.
