The Highland Huskies came up with an 8-0 victory in conference baseball action last night against Wapello. One run in the first inning and two more in the fourth would have been enough to get Highland the win, but five runs in the seventh provided plenty of insurance.
Sophomore Bryce Hazelett’s outstanding pitching performance led the way, finishing two outs shy of a complete game while giving up only four hits and three walks and racking up a whopping 14 strikeouts.
Senior Will Dunbar led the Huskies at the plate with three hits, including two doubles. Hazelett had two knocks and two runs batted in, while freshman Garrett Beeson also had two hits and an RBI and junior Ryker Miller scored two runs as Highland improves to 3-3 overall and remains a perfect 3-0 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.
Husky softball would not have the same good luck, taking a 2-1 loss in extra innings at Wapello. Both teams scored in the sixth, but it would be the Arrows who walked it off to get the win in the eighth. Highland falls to 1-2 in conference play and 2-3 in total.
