The Washington Demons rolled to a 13-1 home victory over Mount Pleasant in softball last night and completed a sweep of the conference series with their rivals with a four-inning win.
Washington scored three times in the first inning and never slowed down, including putting up two runs in the second, another three in the third and five in the fourth.
Outfielder Kendall Hinrichsen led the Demon lineup with three hits, including two doubles, and finished with two runs scored and two runs batted in. Catcher Alyvia Anderson cranked a double as part of two hits and also had two RBI, while fellow junior Halle Cuddeback drove in three runs.
Seniors Emery Walton and Rylee Libe each had one hit, one RBI and two runs scored for Washington. Cuddeback allowed just four hits in four innings pitched and had four strikeouts in the circle as the Demons not only start Southeast Conference play 3-0 but have won five straight overall to improve to 7-1.
Washington baseball would not be as fortunate, suffering an 8-1 loss to Mount Pleasant at Dick Sojtka Memorial Field. After the Panthers scored in the top of the first inning, the Demons had an immediate answer with a run of their own in the bottom half.
Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring Washington could muster, while Mount Pleasant scored again in the second and fourth innings. The Demons would keep the game a two-run contest until the Panthers exploded for five runs in the seventh to put things out of reach.
Washington got a strong starting pitching performance from freshman Brady Krantz, who allowed only two earned runs on two hits in five innings and had three strikeouts.
The Demons also got one hit each from senior Luke Beenblossom, juniors Nate Edmonds and Luke Schiebel and sophomores Kael Williams and Caden Greiner. Washington remains winless to start conference play and is now 1-5 overall.
While Demon baseball will have to wait until Monday to next take the field, Washington softball is in action today and tomorrow at the annual Iowa City West Classic on the campus of the University of Iowa.
The Demons play Bettendorf and Davenport Assumption this afternoon and will face Iowa City Regina and Western Dubuque throughout the day tomorrow.
