The second-ranked team in the state in Class 1A softball took a pair of defeats Saturday, but the Sigourney Savages were beaten by a Class 4A school in both games at the Oskaloosa Tournament.
Sigourney fell behind 2-0 in their first game against North Polk but would cut the deficit in half in the fourth inning thanks to a home run by Josephine Moore, one of two hits by the junior catcher. Unfortunately, that would be all the Savages would bring across home plate in a 4-1 loss.
Sigourney would get off to a good start in their second game against Newton, scoring twice in the second inning and putting two more runs on the board in the third after Newton had tied the game at 2. But the Cardinals exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third and would never look back, going on to win 8-4.
Carly Goodwin came up with two hits, including a double, and two runs scored for the Savages, while fellow senior Ava Fineran had two runs batted in and junior Ava Fisch hit a triple.
The losses drop Sigourney to 5-3. The Savages will return to conference play later tonight when they go on the road to face South Iowa Cedar League rival Lynnville-Sully.
