The Washington Demons swept a conference softball doubleheader last night against Fort Madison. Washington fell behind 2-0 in Game One but scored five times in the second inning to go in front and never slowed down, adding another two runs in each of the next two innings and going on to win 10-3.

Sophomore Leighton Salazar came up with two hits to lead the Demon lineup, including a two-run single in the second. Ella Greiner had two hits and scored two runs, while fellow junior Lauren Hinrichsen also scored twice and finished with a pair of runs batted in.

Senior Emery Walton added another two runs scored, while junior Bella Salazar was the winning pitcher for Washington, throwing a complete game and racking up 12 strikeouts.

The Demons again fell behind 2-0 half an inning in against Fort Madison in Game Two, but they had another quick response with five runs in the bottom of the first. Another five runs in the third would be all they needed to earn a 10-2 victory.

Leighton Salazar had a four-hit effort in Game Two that included two runs scored and one RBI. Catcher Alyvia Anderson drove in three on two hits, while fellow junior Halle Cuddeback also had a pair of knocks.

In addition to two hits at the plate, freshman Colbie Greiner was the winning pitcher for Washington, allowing seven hits in five innings of work and striking out three. The Demons are still undefeated in the Southeast Conference with the two victories, improving to 5-0 in the league and 9-3 overall.

Washington baseball did not have the same luck in starting their conference series with Fort Madison. Game One was a slugfest at Dick Sojtka Memorial Field, but the Bloodhounds came out on top 14-10.

Less offense on the board in Game Two on both sides meant that the Demons would be defeated by a 5-1 final. Washington drops to 0-5 in conference play and 1-7 overall. Both Demon squads will return to the diamond Thursday when they go on the road to finish up their series with Fort Madison.
