The Sigourney Savages picked up another convincing win on the softball diamond Monday night by knocking off Lynnville-Sully 15-0. Sigourney exploded for 11 runs in the first inning on their way to a win that only took five frames.

Junior Josephine Moore had a big game at the plate for the Savages, blasting a home run and a double on her way to five runs batted in and two more scored. Senior Carly Goodwin also cranked a homer and a double while scoring twice and recording three RBI.

Sigourney senior Erin Dawson added to the slugfest with a home run of her own and two runs driven in. Dani Aller had two hits and scored twice, while junior Ava Fisch added a hit, two runs scored and two batted in.

Freshman Kia Montgomery, eighth-grader Ella Burns and seniors Ava Fineran and Amiya Smallwood all scored runs for the Savages, while Goodwin pitched five no-hit innings, allowed just a single walk and racked up 13 strikeouts as the second-ranked team in Class 1A improves to 5-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 6-3 overall.

Sigourney baseball nearly scored a big win as well Monday. Facing equally undefeated Lynnville-Sully, the Savages tied the game up at one in the second and scored twice in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead.

Unfortunately, the Eagles tied the game back up in the bottom of the fifth and would come up with a walk-off win by a final score of 4-3. Caden Clarahan came up with two doubles and two runs batted in, while fellow junior Cole McKay and senior Jake Moore had one hit and one run scored each.

Clarahan allowed just two earned runs on five hits and four walks in six innings pitched, picking up eight strikeouts, but Sigourney’s 7-0 start to the season would not be extended.
