The Washington Demon softball team remains undefeated in conference games after knocking off Fort Madison 6-4 last night on the road. Washington got off to a brilliant start, as junior Ella Greiner blasted a two-run home run in the second at-bat of the game.

The Demons put up another four runs in the second inning, including sophomore Leighton Salazar swatting a two-run double. Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring that Washington would do.

Fort Madison slowly crept its way back into the game, scoring twice in the third and once each in the fifth and sixth. But the Demons would stand their ground down the stretch, thanks in part to junior pitcher Bella Salazar finishing off a complete game where she gave up three earned runs on eight hits but also struck out seven.

After the win, Washington head coach Ben Obermann told KCII Sports that, for a team that is one of the highest scoring in the state, winning a lower-scoring contest is a good lesson for future games.

“Once you get deeper in the postseason, you’re going to see good pitching and you’re going to be in low-scoring games,” Obermann said. “You’ve got figure out how to grind out those victories. This game is a tough game. There’s going to be nights like this where it just doesn’t go your way offensively the entire night. It’s good for us to be in those situations.”

Greiner and Salazar had two hits each and combined to score three runs as the Demons, ranked eighth in Class 3A, improve to 6-0 in the Southeast Conference and 10-3 overall. Washington will be back in action today and tomorrow at the Jesup Invitational.
