WMU/Columbus baseball made sure they weren’t forgotten in the Super Conference last night, earning a tight win over Highland 6-4.

It was the Huskies who would jump in front first, turning a leadoff walk into a one run lead. It would be short lived, however, as WMU would tally two in the bottom half. Tyson Kaalberg had one of his two RBI’s in the frame with a sac fly as the Wolves took a temporary lead of their own.

Highland wasted no time responding in the second. Logan McFarland, who also pitched for the Huskies, knocked a clutch single into center field to plate Caleb Wheeler and Cash Cole. Highland doubled their lead in the third, but the momentum of the game shifted immediately after.

Wolves’ starting pitcher Trevor Phillips was relieved by Cael Phillips with one away in the third, bases loaded, and WMU trailing 4-2. A lined shot from Colten Sypherd into center seemed destined to score at least two, but a diving grab from Riley Kaalberg kept the runners at bay. Phillips was then able to retire the side in what would be his second of eight straight outs.

Still needing to find some offense late, hits from Cael Phillips and Kason Dopler in the fourth helped the Wolves manufacture two more runs to knot the game at 4. A stiff wind in Winfield was no match for back-to-back fifth-inning doubles from Trevor Phillips and Tyson Kaalberg that gave WMU a 5-4 lead. McFarland’s night on the mound came to a close after 5. He allowed six hits, striking out three in the loss. The Wolves tacked on one more in the sixth, and with a little insurance, Phillips closed the door on the win and a dazzling pitching performance. The senior allowed one hit in four and two thirds, fanning eight.

WMU is off until Monday when they head to Van Buren County. Highland stays in the Super Conference tonight for a date with Hillcrest Academy.
