After a brilliant season that produced 11 wins, the second conference title in program history and a trip to the substate finals, the Washington Demon boys’ soccer team is reaping the rewards of their efforts with postseason honors.

That includes seven players being named to the all-conference team in the Southeast Conference. Randy Huertero is not only a first-team selection, but he is also named the Southeast Conference Co-Player of the Year.

Huertero scored just one goal and had only one assist this season, but Washington head coach Sally Hart tells KCII Sports that the center defender was a critical component for the Demons.

“Defender’s don’t get a lot of marks on the stat sheet,” Hart says, “but their impact on the game is enormous, and Randy was playing top-notch soccer all spring, really protecting our goal and ultimately helping in securing the conference championship.”

Along with Huertero, fellow seniors Brayan Arreola, Angel Mata, Lane Schrock and Isaac Gentry are also all-conference choices. Mata had three goals and a team-high six assists, including scoring the winning goal in the second half of Washington’s lone playoff victory against Fort Madison.

Schrock had two goals and four assists for the Demons, while Gentry had three assists and scored three times, one of which was the only goal in a victory over Fort Madison on May 8th that clinched the program’s first-ever outright conference title.

Arreola had four assists and scored eight goals, which was tied with fellow seniors Manny Raymundo and Bil De La Rosa for the second-most on the team. De La Rosa received an honorable mention all-conference nod, as did Raymundo, who exits his time with Washington with school records of 38 goals and 27 assists in his career.

Huertero, Mata, Schrock, Gentry, Arreola and Raymundo also receive academic all-conference honors after having grade-point averages of better than 3.25.

At the Demons’ season-end awards banquet last Monday night, Huertero was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Year, while sophomore Edwin Cortes was named the Offensive Player of the Year after scoring a team-high nine goals in 2024.

Goalkeeper Braedon Tappan was named the team’s Rookie of the Year, while fellow freshman Fletcher Brower received the Coaches’ Award. Junior Brendan Taylor won the Demon Award, while Raymundo earned the Golden Boot for his new school-record marks.

Washington boys’ soccer also earns an Excellence in Academic Achievement award from the Iowa High School Athletic Association, given to teams across the state in any sport who have a combined average GPA of between 3 and 3.25. The Demons’ 11-4 record in 2024 is the second best in a single season in school history.
