The Washington Demons cruised to another pair of conference victories on the softball diamond last night in a home doubleheader against Fairfield.

Washington fell behind 2-0 in the first inning of Game One, but six runs in the second would put the Demons on top for good, with another two in the third and five in the fifth allowing them to win the game 13-3 after only five frames.

Junior Ella Greiner had two hits and two runs batted in for Washington while also scoring a run, while sophomore Leighton Salazar also had a two-hit game and scored twice.

Junior Alyvia Anderson hit a double and finished with three RBI for the Demons, while freshman Colbie Greiner led all hitters with three knocks and had two runs scored. Junior Bella Salazar got the pitching victory after allowing two earned runs on six hits and striking out three in five innings.

Game Two saw Washington trail once more in the first after Fairfield junior Lilly Bergren hit a solo home run. Junior Emery Walton’s two-run double in the bottom of the first put the Demons in front, but the Trojans tied the game at two in the top of the second.

That’s where Washington would explode, scoring five times in the bottom of the second to take a lead they would never relinquish. Fairfield would hang around, matching the Demons’ pair of runs in the third with two of their own and cutting the deficit to three runs in the sixth.

But one more insurance run in the seventh and three outs from junior pitcher Halle Cuddeback allowed the home team to take down the Trojans by a final score of 10-6.

Bella Salazar had a three-hit game that included a double, three runs batted in and two runs scored. Leighton Salazar also had three hits and scored once. Both juniors Lauren and Kendall Hinrichsen each crossed home plate twice.

The victories elevate Washington’s record to 16-3, including a perfect 8-0 mark in the Southeast Conference. The Demons, ranked eighth in the state in Class 3A, return to action tomorrow night at Centerville.
