Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus baseball edged out Van Buren County 7-5 Monday night. The Wolves took the first lead of the night with four runs in the third and were up 5-0 midway through the game.

Van Buren County scored four times in the bottom of the fourth and tied the game with a run in the fifth, a tie that would hold up into extra innings. But WMU/Columbus scored twice in the ninth and would make that lead stand up to get a road victory.

Sophomore Tyson Kaalberg came up with two hits, including a double, and scored two runs to pace the Wolves’ lineup. Junior Riley Kaalberg also had a double as part of two hits, as well as one run batted in and one run scored.

Sophomore Trevor Phillips finished with two hits and one RBI, while junior Lane Genkinger drove in three and scored once to go with one knock. Senior Cael Phillips crossed home plate twice for WMU/Columbus while picking up a hit and a RBI, while sophomore Nic Sparrow added a hit and a run scored as the Wolves raise their record to 3-4.

Winfield-Mount Union softball would not have the same good fortune, suffering a 12-2 defeat to VBC in six innings. The Wolves surrendered three runs in each of the first two innings and could not recover, dropping to 4-7 with the loss. Both teams for WMU are back on the home diamond tonight against Danville.
