The Sigourney Savages swept another pair of games on the diamond against a conference rival last night in beating North Mahaska. Sigourney softball scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back on their way to a 7-0 win.
Junior Josephine Moore led the Savage lineup with three hits, including her sixth home run of the season, as well as three runs scored and two runs batted in. Senior Carly Goodwin hit her fifth homer of the summer on her way to two hits and two RBI, while senior Erin Dawson and juniors Ava Fisch and Dani Aller all had one hit and one run scored each.
Goodwin pitched all seven innings and allowed only a single hit. She also racked up 16 strikeouts for Sigourney, as the third-ranked team in Class 1A improves to 9-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 12-4 overall.
Savage baseball got two runs each in the third and fourth innings to break up a scoreless tie with North Mahaska, but scoring eight times in the fifth would allow Sigourney to end the game early in a 12-0 victory. The Savages are now 11-2, including an 8-1 conference record.
The Keota Eagles nearly got a conference win on the road in baseball last night at BGM. Keota scored first in the third inning but saw BGM put up three runs in the bottom of the third to go in front.
Down 5-1 in the top of the sixth, the Eagles came up with four runs to tie things up. But the Bears came up with the go-ahead run in the bottom half and would hold on in the seventh to win 6-5. The loss drops Keota to 5-8, including a 2-8 record in league play.
Eagle softball would keep things close with BGM early on, only trailing 1-0 until the Bears put up five runs in the third inning. BGM went on to win 10-0 after six frames, causing Keota to fall to 1-8 in the SICL and 1-9 in total.
Both Eagle teams are off until tomorrow night when they will face Iowa Valley, while both Sigourney squads will also next play tomorrow evening against Belle Plaine.
