Both Lone Tree softball and Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus baseball were winners Wednesday night. Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus picked up an 8-3 victory over Danville. After falling behind in the first inning, the Wolves put up five runs in the third to take a 5-1 lead and would never give it back.

WMU/Columbus matched Danville’s two runs in the fifth and added one more for insurance in the sixth. Senior Cole Milks had two hits for the Wolves, including a triple, and finished with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Sophomore Trevor Phillips also had three RBI on a pair of hits, including a double.

Sophomore Nic Sparrow added two hits and scored two runs for Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus, while sophomore Gavin Prior pitched a complete game and worked around 12 hits allowed to get the win, helping the Wolves raise their record to 4-4.

Lone Tree softball would beat Van Buren County 9-3, even after they fell behind Wednesday evening. The Warriors scored three runs in the top of the third to break up a scoreless tie, but the Lions had three runs of their own ready to go in the bottom half of the inning. Lone Tree scored once in the fourth to take the lead, then used a four-run fifth to seize control. The win helps the Lions improve to 7-5.

Lone Tree baseball would fall behind 3-0 an inning in against Van Buren, but it was the seven runs in the second that put the Warriors in command, as they would go on to win 22-3 after only four frames. Sophomore Emmett Burke had a hit, a run scored and two driven in, but it would not be enough to keep the Lions from falling to 3-7.

Winfield-Mount Union softball played a slugfest Wednesday in which they could not quite top Danville. The Wolves had a 3-2 lead after one inning, but the Bears tied the game in the second and scored four runs in the third to go in front.

WMU hung around, scoring two runs in each of the next two frames to only trail 9-7 and matching four runs by Danville in the sixth with five of their own. But the Bears scored twice more in the seventh and put up a rare zero to escape with a 15-12 win.

Sophomore Ella Kann had a double and scored a run as part of a three-hit night to lead Winfield-Mount Union’s lineup. Sophomore Quin Smith came up with a triple and had four runs batted in on two hits, while senior Jessi Renken scored three times as the Wolves fall to 4-8. Both WMU teams will now face Lone Tree when they host a pair of doubleheaders tonight.
