The Highland Huskies and WACO Warriors finally got the chance to meet on the softball diamond Friday night in Riverside, and the Huskies took full advantage of the wait to strike big in a KCII Area Game of the Week softball doubleheader.

As heard on KCII, in Game One, it was Highland nabbing a 19-0 victory over WACO, powered by 15 hits, 9 of which were RBI. Five of the 9 Huskies in the lineup had at least two hits. Adisyn Prottsman went 3/3 with three singles, two of which brought in runs. Grace Prybil took the win in the circle, allowing just one hit paired with four strikeouts. WACO struggled to find success out of the gate, and only managed to notch one hit in 11 at bats thanks to Natalie Wagler’s single in the third inning. Rhiannon Horn took the loss, allowing 19 runs on 15 hits without recording a strikeout.

In Game Two, it was much of the same. Headlined by a Katie Herrig 3 run bomb in the third, Highland used the momentum from Game One to beat WACO via the mercy rule 14-0. As a team, the Huskies put up 14 runs on 7 hits with 10 knocked in. Lilly Barre scored two runs on one hit with two knocked in. Barre joined KCII Sports postgame to talk about her performance. “I’ve kind of been in a slump at the beginning of the season, and I finally got out of it last night. Just being able to do what I did last night and carry it over today’s game. Just glad I’ve perfected my swing and could finally get out of that slump to make something happen for the team.”

Huskie Head Coach Carrie Wieland also joined KCII Sports postgame to talk about Katie Herrig’s homer. “That was just amazing for her [Herrig]. She was so excited I didn’t know if she could get around the bases.”

Getting the win in the circle for the Huskies was Adeline Krotz after a complete three inning game, firing three K’s. Drew Graber took the loss for WACO allowing 14 runs on 7 hits with only one strikeout. The WACO bats also missed the edge in Game Two, only notching three hits with one apiece from Natalie Wagler, Lizzy Gerot, and Elyssa Graber.

With both wins, Highland moves to 10-5 on the season with an 8-2 mark in conference play, while WACO drops to 0-10 overall and 0-7 in conference play. Highland is next in action Monday night with a road trip to Burlington to face West Burlington/Notre Dame, while WACO next graces the diamond on Tuesday at home against Columbus.
