With the increased popularity of ATV / UTVs operating in the city limits, the Washington Police Department is offering this reminder of Washington City Ordinance Chapter 77 that applies to Golf Carts and UTVs being operated in the city limits. Persons operating Golf Carts, ATVs or UTVs in the city limits must have a valid Iowa driver’s license and be at least 18 years of age. Operators must also carry proof of liability insurance as required by the Iowa Code. Golf Carts operating on city streets must have permit issued by the Police Department and be equipped with a minimum of the following safety features: Slow moving vehicle sign, bicycle safety flag – the top shall be a minimum of five (5) feet above ground level, adequate brakes, headlights and taillights, headlights must be used during operations, with seat belts for each person. ATVs and UTVs operated on city streets shall be registered as required by the Iowa code and shall be equipped with parts, lamps and other equipment as required by the Iowa code.
