The Columbus Wildcats earned a 9-2 victory over Pekin on the softball diamond Friday night in Columbus Junction. Columbus fell behind 1-0 after one inning but responded by scoring three times in the second and putting up nine unanswered runs.

Junior Lily Coil led the way for the Wildcat lineup with four hits, three of which were doubles, as well as two runs scored and three runs batted in. Freshman Ellie Sanders had three hits in addition to two runs and two RBI.

Sophomore Daniela Diaz also scored twice, while sophomore Kennedy Woepking hit a double and drove in a run. Woepking pitched a complete game and allowed only one earned run on seven hits.

Columbus would not be able to pick up a win in either game they played at a tournament at Cardinal High School in Eldon. The Wildcats lost 12-2 in six innings against Keokuk, falling behind 6-1 after three innings. Coil had two hits, one run scored and another one driven in, but the ‘Cats would not be able to rally.

Columbus also lost to the hosts from Cardinal, as eight runs in the second inning powered the Comets to a 12-0 victory after four frames. The losses move the Wildcats’ record to 4-16, including a 3-7 mark in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference. Columbus is back in action tonight at Central Lee.
