The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team matched up against top level competition over the weekend in tournament action at Fort Dodge, winning one of four contests. The Hawks opened with the home Dodgers, ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, falling by a 10-0 count in five innings. The Dodgers piled up four in the first, three in the second, one more in the fourth and two in the fifth to end the game early. Mid-Prairie was out hit 11 to 1 in the tilt, the lone knock, a Kadence Grout single. Grout had the pitching duties for the Hawks, going four, giving up 11 hits, eight earned runs, walking one and striking out one. Meah McCaleb led Fort Dodge with three hits in three tries, three runs and an RBI. Aubrey Alstott threw five shut out innings for the win in the circle.
In game two Mid-Prairie matched up with conference nemesis Iowa City Regina. The Regals scored their fourth win over the Hawks this year, 7-6. Regina got one in the first, which Mid-Prairie answered with a single tally in the top of four. Regina posted a five spot in the bottom, only to see the Hawks counter with five in their half of the fifth to tie the game again at six. Regina got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth. The Hawks out hit Regina 11-10. Kyla Karnes cracked a homer for the Hawks, driving in three. Dakota Mitchell, Kadence Grout and Tessa Bombei all drove in one on one hit. Morgyn Bender had a three hit day, scoring twice and Olivia Swartzentruber had two hits. Brenna Jehle, Grout, Swartzentruber and Karnes all scored once. Alena Snider had the pitching duties for the Hawks going five frames, allowing 10 hits, four earned runs and walking four. Regina was led by Lily Nibaur with a two hit, three RBI day that included a run scored. She was also the winning pitcher going four and two thirds, giving up four hits, one earned run with three walks and two Ks.
Game three was another tight one that went against the Hawks as Clarksville rallied for a walk-off 7-6 win. Each team got one in the first, Mid-Prairie scored three to the Lady Indians two in the third to hold a 4-3 advantage. The Hawks made it 6-3 with two more in the fifth. Clarksville got a single run in the sixth, then down to their final three outs, scored three times to complete the comeback and steal the win. Mid-Prairie out hit the Lady Indians 11-7. Dakota Mitchell led the Mid-Prairie sticks with three hits, one driven in and two runs scored. Kyla Karnes and Morgyn Bender each had two hits and drove in one. Bender also scored a run. Brenna Jehle, Kadence Grout and Tessa Bombei each had an RBI. Grout got the call in the circle, working six and two thirds with eight hits, three earned runs, a walk and a strikeout. Clarksville got two RBI each from Claire Lodge and Hannah Wangsness to go with Emmalee Manwarren’s three hits. Sydney Lovrien threw the compete game to get the win with 11 hits, five earned runs, a walk and two punchouts.
The Hawks finished their time in Fort Dodge with a 5-1 win over Central Springs. Each team scored once in the first. The Hawks added one more in each of the fourth and fifth innings, with two runs coming in the sixth. Mid-Prairie out hit the Panthers 8-4. Brenna Jehle drove in three on a hit to lead the way at the plate for the Hawks. Olivia Swartzentruber had an RBI on two hits with a run. Gabi Robertson added two hits and Dakota Mitchell scored twice. The win belonged to Alena Snider, working six innings of four hit ball with no earned runs, three walks and three strikeouts.
Following the weekend, Mid-Prairie is now 6-11 on the year as they get ready for West Liberty Monday.
