The Lone Tree Lions and Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus Wolves split a Southeast Iowa Super Conference baseball doubleheader Friday night in Winfield.

Game One was scoreless until Lone Tree put up a run in the fifth inning. After WMU/Columbus tied the game in the sixth and took the lead in the top of the seventh, the Lions scored twice in the bottom half to earn a 3-2 walk-off win over the Wolves.

Sophomore Emmett Burke had a hit, a run scored and a run batted in for Lone Tree, while senior Harry Brenneman also came up with a knock and one run scored. Junior pitcher Jack Patterson earned the complete-game victory, giving up no earned runs on five hits and picking up six strikeouts.

Junior Riley Kaalberg had two hits and one RBI for Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus, while junior Lane Genkinger came up with a hit and scored once. Senior Cael Phillips did all the pitching for the Wolves, going six-and-two-thirds innings, striking out six and allowing just the one earned run on seven hits and two walks.

WMU/Columbus took the initial lead in Game Two with a run in the first inning and three more in the second. The Wolves built a six-run lead over Lone Tree by the time the final inning rolled around and would hold on after a late rally from the Lions to get a 7-5 win.

Senior Cole Milks hit a pair of doubles and had a game-high three RBI for Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus, while sophomore Tyson Kaalberg’s three hits led the lineup on his way to scoring once and driving in two.

Sophomore Nic Sparrow had one run batted in and joined Genkinger, Riley Kaalberg and junior Kohlby Newsom in having one hit and one run scored each.

Cael Phillips crossed home plate twice for the Wolves, while sophomore Trevor Phillips earned the victory on the mound by pitching the first five-and-two-thirds innings and giving up no hits, racking up 11 strikeouts while working around three walks to give up a single run.

Patterson and freshman Owen Eden had Lone Tree’s only two hits. Brenneman scored twice and drove in one for the Lions despite not having a knock, while Eden had one RBI and senior Ethan Bockelman came up with a pair of runs batted in.

Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus is now 2-4 in the Super Conference North and 5-6 overall, while Lone Tree is 3-3 in conference play and 4-8 in total.

The Wolves play again tonight against Wapello, while the Lions next take the diamond tomorrow evening against Hillcrest Academy in the KCII Area Game of the Week, which you can hear starting with pregame coverage at 5 p.m. exclusively streaming on KCIIradio.com.
