Keota baseball faced a tall order Monday night with Sigourney riding in on the heels of a five-game win streak. The Eagles hung around, but the Savages left town with their thirteenth win 12-3.

One of the State’s best hitting teams was left scoreless in the first after a strong start from Billie Kindred on the mound. A spectacular catch from Sigourney’s Jake Moore ruined a scoring chance for the Eagles in the bottom half, and there was no blood drawn into the second. It wasn’t quite fireworks from the Savages, but a leadoff double from Isaac Bruns provided a spark that left the visitors up 1-0. While Sigourney pitcher Caden Clarahan struck out the side, Keota took advantage of three walks in the second and knotted things at 1.

The Savage bats would not be kept at bay for long, as six would cross the plate in the very next frame. Kindred allowed just two hits in his two and a third innings, but walks and errors plagued the Eagles as well. They would add one, but trail 7-2 into the fifth. Ike Molyneux had one of his two RBIs off Jacob Libe, putting Sigourney up 6. A frustrating night at the plate saw just two Eagle hits on the evening, both coming from senior Evan Vittetoe. Chase Sieren crossed for Keota in the sixth, but Clarahan’s fifth home run of the season came in the form of a seventh-inning grand slam, quieting the Keota comeback hopes. It was his second long ball in as many games. Clarahan also went four innings on the mound, allowing one hit and striking out eight. Jake Moore handled the final three frames and another Cole McKay highlight-reel play at short put the exclamation point on the Savage win.

Keota is off tomorrow before heading to Southeast Warren, while the Savages look to make it seven in a row Thursday in New London.
