Both the Highland Huskies and Winfield-Mount Union Wolves were swept in diamond doubleheaders on Monday. Highland baseball fell behind 2-0 after one inning against West Burlington but tied the game up with a pair of runs in the second.

The Falcons grabbed the lead with a run in the fourth, but the Huskies scored four times in the sixth to go in front. Highland’s lead was 7-3 going into the bottom of the seventh, but West Burlington managed to score five runs in the final frame and walk off for an 8-7 victory.

Colton Sypherd came up with two base hits and two runs batted in to lead the lineup, while fellow junior Ryker Miller had two doubles and two runs scored for the Huskies, who fall to 7-10.

Highland softball also had the initial lead against West Burlington Notre Dame, jumping out to a 6-0 advantage by the time the bottom of the third inning rolled around. But the Falcons mounted a comeback with a run in the third; two in the fourth and four in the fifth. Three more runs in the sixth would provide insurance in a 10-6 win.

Senior Peyton Brun had two hits, including a double, as well as one RBI and a run scored for the Huskies. Junior Lilly Barre hit a double on her way to driving in a run, while Maya Singbeil scored two runs to go with a hit and a RBI. Fellow eighth-grader Kamryn Fink swatted a home run for her only hit of the night and had two runs batted in as Highland drops to 10-6.

Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus baseball could not crack the scoreboard against Wapello Monday, meaning runs in the first and fifth innings would be enough to give the Indians a 2-0 victory.

Junior Riley Kaalberg and sophomore Kason Dopler were both excellent on the mound for the Wolves, each pitching three innings and racking up five strikeouts while combining to allow only four hits.

Senior Cael Phillips had a pair of base knocks, but WMU/Columbus never pushed across a run on six total hits and thus fell to 5-7 overall and 2-5 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.

Winfield-Mount Union softball was blanked by Wapello and allowed six runs each in the second and third innings of a 12-0 loss Monday. Senior Makiah Lower had the only hit of the game for the Wolves, who dropped to 3-7 in the Super Conference North and 4-12 overall.
