Winfield-Mount Union came up just short in a pair of contests on the diamond against Pekin Tuesday night. WMU/Columbus baseball took an early lead by scoring three runs in the first inning, but that would be all the scoring that the Wolves would do in a 5-3 loss to the Panthers.

Cole Milks had a hit, a run scored and a run batted in for Winfield-Mount Union/Columbus. Fellow senior Cael Phillips also had one hit and one run scored, while junior Lane Genkinger stroked a double on his way to one RBI.

Sophomore Trevor Phillips added a base hit and one driven in as the Wolves fell to 2-6 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 5-8 overall.

WMU softball scored a run in the top of the first but would be down 4-1 by the time the inning was over. Pekin added two more runs in the second, and while the Wolves would score once in the fifth and twice in the seventh, the Panthers would hang on to win 6-4.

Senior Jessi Renken had two hits, including a triple, as well as a run scored and one run batted in to lead the Winfield-Mount Union lineup. Sophomore Ella Kann and freshman Lilly Heckethorn each had one hit and one run scored, while senior Makiah Lower picked up a RBI on one hit as the Wolves dropped to 3-8 in the Super Conference North and 4-13 overall.
