The Sigourney Savages knocked off conference rival English Valleys in both baseball and softball Wednesday. Sigourney softball did all their scoring in the first inning, but three early runs would be enough to hold on and win 3-2. Senior pitcher Carly Goodwin allowed only one earned run on four hits and three walks while recording 14 strikeouts in a complete-game victory.
Juniors Ava Fisch and Josephine Moore led the Savage lineup with three hits each, with Moore hitting two doubles and picking up one run batted in and Fisch coming up with one double and scoring once. Sigourney, ranked fifth in the state in Class 1A, used the win to move to 12-1 in the South Iowa Cedar League and 15-6 overall.
Savage baseball was already up 2-0 at English Valleys when the offense exploded, scoring a whopping 18 runs in just the third inning and going on to a 20-0 victory that took only four frames.
Issac Bruns hit a home run and a double on his way to four RBI for Sigourney, while fellow junior Caden Clarahan also drove in four and had two hits and two runs scored.
Senior Jake Moore and junior Cole McKay also each came up with two base hits and a pair of runs scored, combining for five runs batted in. Junior Brady Clark added two hits, two RBI and three runs scored.
Senior Reid Molyneux pitched all four innings for the Savages and gave up no hits, adding nine punch-outs as Sigourney moved to 10-1 in conference play and 14-2 overall.
