The Columbus Wildcats earned a 1-0 win on the softball diamond Friday against conference rival Wapello. Columbus put the only run of the night on the board in the top of the sixth inning when freshman Iris Garza would get hit by a pitch and was driven in by sophomore Kennedy Woepking.

From there, pitcher Lily Coil would finish off a complete-game victory. The junior allowed only three hits and four walks while racking up nine strikeouts as the Wildcats improve to 4-8 in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference and 6-18 overall.

Columbus had suffered an 18-0 loss in three innings to Louisa-Muscatine the night before. The Wildcats went hitless and could not catch up to the 12th-ranked team in Class 1A. Columbus will play again tonight against Van Buren County.
