The Washington Demons took a pair of losses Saturday while hosting the annual Eddie Jones Memorial Softball Invitational. Washington fell in their first game against Davenport West 6-4, taking the initial lead with a run in the third inning but falling behind after the Falcons scored four times in the fifth.
The Demons would rally with two runs in the bottom of the fifth and the tying run in the seventh to force extra innings, but Davenport West scored twice in the eighth and would hold on for the win.
Kendall Hinrichsen had three hits, including a double, and scored tree runs to lead the Washington lineup, while fellow junior Ella Greiner added two knocks and three runs batted in.
Game Two saw the Demons in a scoreless tie with West Liberty until the Comets put up four runs in the fifth on their way to a 5-2 victory. Junior Bella Salazar came up with a team-high two hits and had one RBI for Washington.
Greiner and sophomore Leighton Salazar added one hit and one run scored each as the Demons, ranked ninth in the state in Class 3A, have lost three in a row to fall to 21-7.
Meanwhile, the Highland Huskies earned a split Saturday at the Eddie Jones Memorial Invite. Highland won their first contest by knocking off Griswold. Trailing 3-2 after three innings, the Huskies scored three times in the fourth to go in front and would go on to get a 7-3 win.
Senior Sarah Burton had two hits and scored three runs to lead Highland at the plate. Senior Peyton Brun blasted a double on her way to two runs batted in, while Kamryn Fink also had two RBI and fellow eighth-grader Mayia Singbeil joined Fink in having one hit and one run scored.
Senior Grace Prybil pitched all six innings for the Huskies and gave up no earned runs on five hits and two walks while also picking up four strikeouts.
Highland grabbed the initial lead in their second game against Davenport Assumption when Fink reached safely in the third inning and came around to score courtesy of senior Madison Beeson.
Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring that the Huskies do, and the Knights would not only tie the game up but also score once in the seventh to get the 2-1 victory.
Fink, Singbeil and Burton would have the only hits of the game as Highland’s record moves to 13-8. The Huskies are back in action tonight against New London.
