Super Conference softball is on the KCII3 Stream tonight, when Columbus, fresh off one of its biggest wins of the season, hosts Highland who aims to maintain the two-spot in the North.

The Wildcats wrapped up last week winning by the thinnest of margins, 1-0 over Wapello. It was the sixth win of the year for Columbus, and first against an opponent with a win percentage at .500 or better. In a game that only saw seven total hits between both teams, Lily Coil had two including a double. Kennedy Woepking knocked in the lone run, while Coil pitched seven innings of shutout softball. Coil is third in the entire state, hitting a red-hot .651. Not to be overlooked, freshman Ellie Sanders has a team-high 33 hits and is getting on base more than 60 percent of the time. Columbus bats .264 as a team, but has hurt its own cause by committing 74 errors in the field. Woepking has been the most-utilized pitcher this season, accounting for half of the team’s strikeouts and more than 78 of the 132 total innings. The Wildcats bring a 6.95 ERA into Tuesday night, with opponents hitting .324 against them.

Highland entered the week a game and a half behind Conference-leading Louisa Muscatine, but still totes a solid 13-8 record. Over the weekend the Huskies fell to 3A Assumption 2-1, but scored a 7-3 win against Griswold, the tenth-ranked team in 1A. Grace Prybil pitched in the win, striking out four in six. Payton Brun and Kamryn Fink each drove in two runs, while Adisyn Prottsman and Sarah Burton set the pace with two hits apiece. Highland has built an impressive .311 team average as Burton and Brun are neck-and-neck for the lead. A slugging team as well, the Huskies have 38 doubles, five triples, and seven home runs on the year. Prybil has been the go-to for Highland in the circle, accruing a 10-3 record and 1.25 ERA. It’s been equally sound in the field, with just 24 errors committed by the Huskies and a fielding percentage of .952.

Since 2009, the Wildcats have gotten the best of Highland just three times, the most recent in 2020. The Huskies have won the last six, including an 11-1 win on June 4.
