The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk softball team traveled to Linn-Mar for a tournament last weekend, dropping four contests. The Hawks opened with a game against No. 3 in Class 4A Fort Dodge, who they had lost to earlier this season by the mercy rule, this time they were on the wrong end of a 7-1 score. Mid-Prairie got their one run in the first to take an early lead before the Dodgers came back with two in the third and five in the fifth. The Golden Hawks were out hit 9-8, but drew three walks. Dakota Mitchell led the way at the plate with two hits, including her third homer of the year. Kadence Grout and Brenna Jehle also had two hits each. Grout went five innings in the circle, giving up eight hits and seven earned runs, walking one and striking out two.

The Hawks fell to No. 2 in Class 2A Alburnett 11-6. The slugfest saw the Hawks get hot at the plate early, leading 3-1 after one and 6-1 after one and a half. The Pirates countered with seven in the bottom of the second, and scored three insurance runs in the fifth for the win. The Golden Hawks were out hit 11-4, but drew four walks and had four hit batters. Grout had a multi-hit game, leading the way with a double, single and four RBI. Jehle and Morgyn Bender also drove in a run each and Sophie Miller scored twice. Claire Trimpe got the call in the circle, working six, giving up nine hits, nine earned runs, three walks and striking out one.

In the consolation bracket, the Golden Hawks ran into No. 9 in Class 4A Cedar Rapids Xavier, coming up short 10-1. The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the second and added on with two each in the third and fourth, three more in the fifth and another two in the sixth. The Hawks got their lone run in the fourth. Xavier out hit Mid-Prairie 17-3. Mitchell, Grout and Bender each had a hit for the Hawks, with Bender driving in Trimpe. Grout went six in the circle with 17 hits, 10 earned runs and one strikeout.

In the final game of the tourney, it was West Delaware doubling up the Hawks 4-2. Mid-Prairie trailed 1-0 after one, but answered with two in the second to take a brief lead before West Delaware responded with three in the third and both pitchers and defenses locked the game down from there. The Golden Hawks were out hit 8-6. Mitchell led Mid-Prairie with two singles and a run scored. Gabi Robertson had a hit and an RBI. Jehle, Bender and Sophia Puttmann each had singles in the Golden Hawk order. Trimpe took the ball in the circle, going the distance with seven hits, four earned runs, two walks and two strikeouts. Following the tournament, Mid-Prairie’s record stood at 6-17.
