Friday is busy on the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk sports calendar with both baseball and softball in action. The Golden Hawk baseball team is in Cascade for a meeting with the Cougars. The Hawks are 17-8 on the season, 13-5, Champions of the South Division of the River Valley Conference. Mid-Prairie has been off since splitting a Monday doubleheader with Durant in Wellman, dropping game one 8-6 in extras, and winning game two 10-0 in five. On the year, the Hawks are hitting .301 as a club with a .452OBP and .379 slug with 176 runs scored on 193 hits, 148 walks and 143 strikeouts. Four Hawks are hitting .300 or better, led by Tatem Telfer at .378 with 31 total hits and 24RBI. Brady Weber has scored 23 times. On the mound, the Mid-Prairie team ERA is 3.26 with a .237 opponent average on 153 hits, 76 earned runs, 112 walks and 193 strikeouts. Telfer is 5-1 with a 1.95ERA. Weber, Carson Pence, Brock Harland and Bowen Burmeister are all multi-game winners with a combined 3.43ERA.
Cascade is 7-10 this season. They were a 17-1 winner over Tipton Monday. On the year, the Cougars hit .259 with a .368OBP and .342slug, scoring 99 runs on 116 hits with 66 walks and 98 strikeouts. Three Cougars are hitting .300 or better led by Nathan Schokemoehl at .333 with 18 hits. He is tied with Cooper Hummel at a team best 11 RBI. Will Hosch has scored 15 times. The Cascade club ERA is 4.47 with a .205 opponent average on 114 hits, 69 earned runs, 88 walks and 92 strikeouts. Eli Fritz is 2-3 on the mound with a 2.33 ERA. Mid-Prairie has won four of the last five in the series including a 2-1 win at Mount Mercy in Cedar Rapids last season. Action starts tonight at 7:30p.m. at American Legion Field in Cascade.
The Mid-Prairie softball team has a daytime doubleheader Friday at Pearl Field on the campus of the University of Iowa for the Iowa City West Rick Doran Classic. The Golden Hawks open the day with the Independence Mustangs, then later face the host Women of Troy. Mid-Prairie enters play with a 7-18 overall record after splitting a doubleheader with Durant Monday in Kalona, beating the Wildcats in extras in game one, 10-9, before bowing to Durant 5-1 in game two. On the year, the Hawks hit .298 as a team, with a .390OBP and .391 slug, scoring 129 runs on 173 hits with 59 walks and 115 strikeouts. Individually, five Golden Hawks are hitting . 300 or better, led by Dakota Mitchell at .420 with 29 total hits and 28 runs scored. Kadence Grout is the team leader with 17RBI. Grout also leads in the circle with a 5-11 record and .367 opponent average on 142 hits, 66 earned runs, 19 walks, 32 strikeouts and a 5.59ERA.
Independence is 16-17 on the year after a 4-3 win over Cascade Tuesday. On the season, the Mustangs hit .321 as a team with a .386OBP and .419 slug with 173 runs on 247 hits, 82 walks and 135 strikeouts. Individually, five ‘Stangs are hitting .300 or better, led by Havana Griffith at .575 with 50 total hits and 31 runs. Allison Kleve has a team best 30RBI. In the circle the ‘Stangs have a staff ERA of 3.46 with a .249 opponent average on 216 hits, 90 earned runs, 85 walks and 148 strikeouts. Kleve is 11-6 with a 2.49ERA. This is the first all-time meeting between the two schools.
Iowa City West is 2-29 this year. They dropped a doubleheader to Cedar Rapids Kennedy by a combined 24-1 score Thursday. On the year the Women of Troy hit .215 as a team with a .264OBP and .249 slug. Scoring 47 runs on 121 hits, 30 walks and 156 strikeouts. Two are hitting .300 or better led by Savannah Mathias with a .371 mark and 26 total hits with 11 runs scored. Cecilia Sterba is the team leader with seven RBI. These two teams last met in 2022 with the Golden Hawks getting a 5-4 win.
