The Washington Demons will finish up the conference portion of their softball season when they conclude a series with Burlington on the road tonight in a game you can hear on KCII.

Dropping both games of the doubleheader they hosted on Monday against Burlington has Washington in the midst of a five-game losing streak. Nonetheless, the Demons have had a stellar season otherwise, coming into tonight with a 21-9 record and the number-thirteen ranking in the state in Class 3A.

Sophomore Leighton Salazar’s .528 batting average, 56 hits and 45 runs scored lead a lineup that has averaged over eight runs per game. Ella Greiner has produced at a high level as well for the Demons by hitting .464 with six doubles, two home runs and 26 runs batted in.

Fellow junior Bella Salazar is batting .340 with 31 RBI and is only trailing teammate Alyvia Anderson for the conference high in runs batted in, as the junior has 33 RBI to go with a .374 average, eight doubles and two homers.

But all that offensive firepower was not enough to keep Washington from being shut out for the first time this season in the losses to Burlington earlier this week.

Senior Saydee Plummer, sophomore Aubrey Hesler and freshman Kylee Hill have formed a spectacular pitching trio, combining for a conference-low 1.53 earned-run average that has the Greyhounds at 17-5-1 overall and a win away from back-to-back league championships and their third Southeast Conference title in the last four years.

Washington has lost 12 of the previous 15 meetings with Burlington. You can hear Demon softball duel the Greyhounds this evening on 106.1 FM KCII as well as streaming on the KCII1 app and KCIIradio.com, starting with the Roder Epoxy Pregame Show at 7 o’clock.
