The newest entry in the longstanding Washington and Mid-Prairie baseball rivalry played out Saturday at Paul N. Bailey Field in Wellman. The Golden Hawks authored an impressive 11-0 win over Washington in five innings. The Demons best chance to get on the board came in the first when they loaded the bases on a pair of walks and a Mid-Prairie error but couldn’t break through against Golden Hawk starter Bowen Burmeister. Demon starter Brady Krantz slowed the Hawks down through the first two innings, putting up zeros before Mid-Prairie exploded in the third.
The Golden Hawks batted around, sending 10 to the plate, scoring six runs on four hits, with two RBI for Landry Gingerich and one each for Brock Harland and Tatem Telfer. Mid-Prairie followed that up with a five run fourth on four more hits, with two more RBI each for Telfer and Gingerich. While the offense was rolling, so was Burmeister on the bump for the Hawks. The senior starter spun a no-hitter with six strikeouts and five walks. He talked about the outing live on the KCII postgame show.
Burmeister said, “I had my off-speed pitches today. I got a lot of whiffs and weak contact. Coach Mullet and Brock (Harland) do a really great job calling pitches for us. They slow them down and speed them up and they can’t really catch up to it. It’s a good way to get punchouts. We’re really rolling as a staff, come together as a unit with postseason right around the corner. Zero hits, that’s what I was looking for!”
Gingerich drove in four on two hits to lead Mid-Prairie at the plate, Telfer had three RBI and a run scored on a hit. Blake Swart had a two hit day.
Krantz took the loss for Washington with 2 and two thirds innings, three earned runs and three walks. Caden Greiner reached twice for the Demons on a pair of walks. With the win, Mid-Prairie is now 18-8 as Washington falls to 4-17.
