In a late season, top level matchup Monday in Sigourney, the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk baseball team scored a road win, 9-3 over the No. 8 in Class 1A Savages. The Savages got a first inning run and held that lead until the third when Mid-Prairie plated a pair. Once the Hawks scored, they couldn’t stop putting up another in the fourth, and two each in the fifth, sixth and seventh. Sigourney got their final two runs in the home half of the fifth. Mid-Prairie had eight hits in total on the night, also capitalizing on 10 walks and two Savage errors. Big swings for the Hawks came from Tatem Telfer, who cracked his fifth homer of the year, driving in three total on the night and scoring twice. Brock Harland added an RBI double knocking in a pair on two hits. Bowen Burmeister, Blake Swart and Landry Gingerich all had an RBI each. On the mound, the Weber brothers slowed down a potent Sigourney offense with Brady getting the win in five innings of work with two earned runs on five hits, three walks and 11 punchouts. Brooks finished the final two frames with five Ks and nothing allowed. Golden Hawk head coach Kyle Mullet spoke with KCII Sports about the highlights from the win.
Mullet said, “Our guys put the baseball in play. We had big swings by Tatem Telfer with the home run and Brock Harland with a double off the wall. We were able to bunt the baseball and move runners. Good execution there. One through nine it was tremendous. Just what you want to see this time of year. (Our staff) has done such a great job locating their pitches and throwing strikes. Brady (Weber) had his off-speed and threw it a lot. Sigourney is a very good hitting team. You can’t just serve those guys fastballs. At the same time, when he did throw it, he pounded the outside half with the fastball. Brooks (Weber) has done a tremendous job as a freshman. We have confidence in him. He does a good job throwing strikes, and that’s what we needed. I don’t know if anyone works harder than those two brothers!”
The victory moved Mid-Prairie to 19-8 on the season as Sigourney drops to 17-3. The Golden Hawks are scheduled to host No. 2 in 1A Burlington Notre Dame for Senior Night Wednesday at Paul N. Bailey Field in Wellman. Sigourney will see Wilton Wednesday night.
