The Columbus Wildcats topped the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves 10-0 in their softball regular-season finale Wednesday night. Columbus found the scoreboard early and often, getting a run in the first inning before scoring twice each in the third and fourth frames. Single tallies in the fifth and sixth innings were capped by a three-run seventh.

Sophomore Daniela Diaz led the Wildcats with three hits, including a double and a triple, and three runs scored. Freshman Ellie Sanders cranked a pair of doubles as part of a three-hit night where she also scored twice and had two runs batted in.

Kennedy Woepking added a double as part of two total hits and drove in one for Columbus. Fellow sophomore Lizbet Herrera also had two hits and one RBI, as did eighth-grader Kaylee McCullough, while sophomore Jessica Del Rio scored twice on two hits.

Woepking was the starting and winning pitcher, allowing only three hits and a walk and racking up 11 strikeouts in a complete-game shutout. The win helps the Wildcats improve to 7-21, including finishing 5-10 this season in the North division of the Southeast Iowa Super Conference.

Meanwhile, Winfield-Mount Union falls to 5-19 and ends up 4-12 in the Super Conference North. The Wolves will now start the playoffs by meeting Pekin Monday in Class 1A Region 6, while Columbus’ first game of the postseason is Monday at West Branch in Class 2A Region 8.

WACO softball also suffered a conference loss in their final regular-season game, falling 12-0 to Louisa-Muscatine Monday. Freshman Natalie Wagler had the only hit of the game for the Warriors, who are still winless as they prepare to start the playoffs by facing Holy Trinity Catholic in Class 1A Region 6.
