Both the Lone Tree Lions and WACO Warriors had their softball seasons come to a close with first-round playoff defeats Monday night. Lone Tree fell to Springville in a 12-10 slugfest in Class 1A Region 8, while WACO was knocked off 13-2 by Holy Trinity Catholic in 1A Region 6.
Despite trailing 3-0 after the top of the first inning, Lone Tree put up a pair of runs in the home half and used a three-run second frame to go in front 5-4. Springville would retake the lead with two runs in the third and had a 9-5 lead when the Lions scored five times in the fifth.
But the Orioles came up with three runs of their own in the sixth and would blank Lone Tree from there. The season ends with a record of 12-14 for the Lions, who will be graduating a pair of seniors in Hogan Eden and Lila Bell.
WACO took the initial lead with a pair of runs in the first on the road, but Holy Trinity Catholic put up three runs in the bottom half of the inning and would score eight times in the second to seize control, going on to end the game after four frames.
The Warriors have their first season in eight years end winless. WACO will be losing one senior in Rhiannon Horn to graduation.
