Less than twenty-four hours after the softball team clinched a regional championship bid, Sigourney baseball squares off with BGM for a district title. The second meeting of 2024 can be heard tonight on KCII.

The Savages combined for a no-hitter, but still had to squeak out a 6-4 victory over Lone Tree in the second round Tuesday. Caden Clarahan tossed five dominant innings, while Chase Clarahan supplied a late grand slam to push past the Lions. With one of the best run differentials in 1A baseball, Sigourney boasts the eighth-best batting average in their class, thanks to six of their nine starters at .300 or better. Seven Savages have gone yard this year to give the team the second-most 1A home runs. Perhaps overshadowed by the hitting this season has been Sigourney’s work in the field. With a team fielding percentage of .943, the middle infield of Cole McKay and Brady Clark is complemented by Jake Moore and Solon Yates at the corners. A district championship is foremost in the minds of the Savages, but a win tonight would also hit the 20-win mark for the first time since 2010.

BGM baseball notched their spot in tonight’s game by edging out Hillcrest Academy 7-6. At no surprise to Bears fans, Tucker Wright and Dominic Coleman provided the brunt of the offensive attack. Second and third in team hits, they combined for five more Tuesday night with each driving in a run. In 2024, BGM has averaged more than six runs per game while allowing five. The Savages hold the advantage in most statistical categories, but perhaps one of the Bears’ biggest weapons is their baserunning with exactly twice as many stolen bases on the year as their counterpart. They’ll utilize their speed plus timely hitting to back up a pitching staff with a 3.46 ERA.

BGM has won 14 of the last 24 games with Sigourney, but the Savages have taken three in a row. This includes a 10-2 win on June 7. Listen to Sigourney baseball compete for a trip to the substate finals tonight on AM 1380 and FM 102.5. Catch pregame coverage at 6:30 p.m. and first pitch at 7 live from Sigourney.
