The Winfield-Mt. Union softball team wrapped up their season in the regional quarterfinal round of the Class 1A tournament last week, falling victim to a comeback by Holy Trinity Catholic, 10-9, in nine innings. The Crusaders started the game with a run in the first. The Lady Wolves took their first lead with a five run third. HTC chipped away with two in the fifth and regained the advantage with a four run sixth to go up 7-5. Down to the final three outs of their season, it was WMU’s turn to rally, scoring twice in the top of the seventh to force extra innings. After a scoreless eighth for both sides, the Lady Wolves posted a pair of runs in the ninth. The Wolves couldn’t close out the postseason win in the bottom half, as the Crusaders rallied with their backs against the wall, scoring three times to walk-off the Wolves.

WMU out hit HTC 15-12 in total, including five extra base knocks. The Lady Wolves drew four walks, but committed three errors. Top Crusader performers at the plate were Kat DiPrima and Ellie Hellman with six total RBI and five hits. Sydney Jarvis was the winning pitcher, spinning all nine innings in the circle with eight hits, four earned runs, four walks and 12 strikeouts. The Lady Wolves had Josie Nelson and Makiah Lower combine on eight hits for three RBI and two runs scored. Nelson had three triples. Kellee Milks had three hits, scored three runs and had an RBI. Katie Miller and Aubrey Valancia each had an RBI. Lower took the pitching loss for the Lady Wolves, going the distance, giving up seven hits, four earned runs, five walks and striking out nine. The Crusaders record improved to 8-11 with the victory as the Wolves end the season at 6-20. WMU says goodbye to seniors Jessi Renken and Makiah Lower.
