The offense of Sigourney baseball has been one for the record books this season. On Saturday night, however, it would be pitching and defense that shined for the Savages as they vanquished BGM 6-1 in the District Championship.
The Bears had won six in-a-row entering the contest, but had no answers for Sigourney starting pitcher, Reid Molyneux. The senior was calm, cool, and collected throughout his five and one-third innings. He fanned nine, allowed just three hits, and stranded six Bears on the bases, including four in scoring position.
Sigourney had its own share of struggles at the plate early on, but finally came through in the third. With nobody on and two away in a scoreless tie, seven straight Savages would reach safely. This included singles from Cole McKay, Caden Clarahan, and Brady Clark. An Isaac Bruns double brought three in to score, and what looked like it might be a quick inning ended with Sigourney leading 5-0. They’d tack on one more in the fourth off a Clarahan sac-fly. Additional RBI’s came from Molyneux and McKay.
While they threatened often, BGM was only able to manage one run in the fifth. It would have certainly been more, if not for an excellent catch by Bruns at the base of the centerfield wall. For the second time that week, Chase Clarahan took to the mound in the sixth with hopes of closing out a 6-1 game. Despite walking one and hitting one, no Bear baserunner advanced past second base and after Clarahan’s only strikeout of the outing, the Savages were District Champs.
The win was number 20 for Sigourney, their first time reaching that mark since 2010. More importantly, they now find themselves one game from the State Tournament for the first time in program history. In a matchup many expected, the #8 Savages will see #2 Burlington Notre Dame Tuesday night in the Substate 6 Finals. Coverage will be available on all KCII streams and signals beginning at 6:30.
