Sigourney baseball has an opportunity to do something it’s never done tonight on KCII. The Savages head to Fairfield to do battle with Burlington Notre Dame in the Substate 6 Finals.

A two-out, five-run rally fueled Sigourney’s win over BGM Saturday night and improved the team to 20-4. In the 6-1 decision, six different Savages scored while Reid Molyneux and Chase Clarahan limited the Bears to just three hits. Sigourney’s offense had four hits, but took advantage of nine walks and one hit batter to keep frequent pressure on BGM in the field.

Caden Clarahan leads Sigourney in hits, RBIs, average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage, as he has for a majority of the season. He is one of four Savages who are getting on base more often than not. This also includes Molyneux, Chase Clarhan, and Cole McKay. Eighth in the final rankings from the Iowa High School Athletics Association, Sigourney has excelled in all three phases of the game. Entering tonight, they’re balancing a .335 average with a team ERA of 2.71, and the second-fewest errors in 1A baseball.

At tonight’s neutral site in Fairfield, the Savages meet #2 Burlington Notre Dame. The Nikes have torn through New London and Moravia this postseason by a combine score of 19-1. They’ve enjoyed similar success at the plate, thanks to seven starters batting above .300. Speaking of, Burlington Notre Dame is also just one away from 300 runs scored, the most in 1A. One of the best pitching teams in the state, opponents are hitting just .153 against the Nikes, who have a team ERA of 1.89.

Tonight’s team’s have split their only two meetings since 2007. The most recent, a 13-7 Sigourney win came in the 2021 District Semifinals. Hear the Savages and Nikes contend tonight for a spot in the 2024 State Tournament. Pregame coverage can be heard on FM 106.1, the KCII1 Mobile App, and KCIIradio.com at 6:30 p.m. with first pitch at 7.
