The Sigourney Savages now know who they’ll have to go through to reach the ultimate prize of a state championship after state tournament brackets for both softball and baseball have been released and first-round opponents have been set.

It will be a familiar face that Sigourney baseball encounters in the Class 1A state quarterfinals when they take on conference rival Lynnville-Sully on Monday afternoon in Carroll. The Hawks are ranked fifth in 1A and won the South Iowa Cedar League again this season while putting up an overall record of 26-3.

That includes not only a 1-0 victory over Ankeny Christian in a substate final, but also beating the Savages 4-3 in a walk-off during their regular-season meeting back on June 3rd.

Sigourney made it to state by defeating second-ranked Burlington Notre Dame 4-2 Tuesday night in the Substate 6 final, helping the eighth-ranked Savages improve to 21-4 and reach the state tournament for the first time in school history.

Meanwhile, Sigourney softball will be taking on Remsen St. Mary’s in the Class 1A quarterfinals this coming Tuesday night in Fort Dodge. The third-ranked Hawks are a perfect 23-0 this season and edged out number-eight Newell-Fonda 2-0 in the 1A Region 1 finals on Monday.

While Remsen St. Mary’s is at state for a fourth straight season, the Savages will appear in the state quarterfinals for a second straight summer and the third time in the last four years after they won an 11-inning thriller with Wapello in walk-off fashion Tuesday evening in the Region 8 finals.

You can hear both Sigourney baseball and softball at state on KCII next week, with baseball coverage beginning Monday at 1 p.m. and softball coverage starting Tuesday night at 7 o’clock.
