Excitement for high school sports has reached a fever pitch in Sigourney. The community is gathering Sunday for a special event to send the Savage boys and girls of Summer off to their respective State Tournaments next week. The Sigourney baseball team is making their first State Tournament appearance in school history. The No. 8 Savages advanced after beating No. 2 Burlington Notre Dame last week 4-2 in the Class 1A Substate 6 championship game, the 300th win in head coach Lee Crawford’s career. The five seed Sigourney, 21-4 champions of the East Division of the South Iowa Cedar League, begin their State tournament run Monday with fellow SICL member, 26-3, undefeated champions of the West Division, No. 5 ranked Lynnville-Sully. The Hawks beat the Savages earlier this season 4-3.

It took extra softball, but the Sigourney girls also clinched their trip to the Class 1A State Tournament in Fort Dodge for the second straight season and third time in the last four with a 2-1 win in 11 innings over the Wapello Arrows at Schafer Field. The sixth seed Savages are ranked No. 6 by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union and have a 23-7 overall record after winning the South Iowa Cedar League crown for the fourth straight season. Their opponent is the No. 3 ranked, undefeated and third seeded Remsen-St. Mary’s Hawks. The Hawks are 23-0 overall, champions of the War Eagle Conference.

Sunday’s event begins at noon at Sigourney High School. The team and coaches invite the community to join them and their families. Baseball leaves for Carroll at 12:30 Sunday afternoon, softball leaves for Fort Dodge at 7p.m. Monday.
