The Sigourney Savages are a step closer to adding a state championship to their outstanding softball season after toppling undefeated Remsen St. Mary’s 3-1 last night in the Class 1A quarterfinals.

Sixth-ranked Sigourney and the number-three Hawks were not only in a scoreless tie through the first five innings, but both teams could not muster a hit against two of the best pitchers in the state in Savage senior Carly Goodwin and St. Mary’s Marina Cronin.

Sigourney finally turned things around in the top of the sixth when junior Ava Fisch sliced a ball down the right field line and raced into third base for a triple.

Goodwin would come up with two out and deliver a single to drive her in and break the scoreless tie, then after junior Josephine Moore reached on an error, senior Erin Dawson came up with a two-run base hit to provide some cushion.

Dawson’s base knock would prove to be crucial, as Remsen St. Mary’s would score once in the final frame, but the Savages would shut down any further attempts at a rally.

Goodwin was brilliant in the circle on her way to her 22nd victory of the season, piling up 13 strikeouts and allowing only two hits and no walks in a complete-game win.

With the victory, Sigourney is now 24-7 and playing in the state semifinals for the first time since 2017. The Savages will take on seventh-ranked Southeast Warren in the Class 1A semis tonight, a team they beat 2-0 in a consolation game at last year’s state tournament and is currently 24-2 this season.

You can hear Sigourney face the Warhawks for a spot in the state championship game this evening on all KCII signals and streaming on KCIIradio.com and the KCII app, starting with the Roder Epoxy Pregame Show at 7 p.m.
