The first state championship in program history culminated a brilliant season for Sigourney Savage softball that also featured a fourth straight South Iowa Cedar League title, and seven players who played key roles in their success make the all-conference team.
Leading that group is senior Carly Goodwin, who finishes her legendary career with a fourth straight all-conference selection. Goodwin is a first-team pitcher after another dominant season where she had a 24-2 record, a minuscule 0.45 earned-run average and 361 strikeouts to finish top five in the state in virtually every pitching statistic.
Goodwin also had the best season of her career as a hitter, putting up a .500 batting average, 14 doubles, seven home runs, 41 runs batted in and 30 runs scored on her way to reaching 200 career hits.
Sigourney’s Josephine Moore is an all-conference choice for a third straight year after the catcher makes the first team. The junior hit .390 with 11 homers and also had 40 RBI.
Fellow junior Ava Fisch batted .367 and scored a team-high 33 runs for the Savages on her way to being named a first-team infielder, while senior Erin Dawson makes the second team as an infielder after hitting .306 with 19 runs driven in and another 24 scored.
Senior Amiya Smallwood scored 21 runs and had 21 hits while being recognized as a second-team outfielder, while honorable mentions go to junior Dani Aller and eighth-grader Ella Bruns.
Head coach Shelly Streigle is also named the SICL Coach of the Year after guiding the Savages to a 26-7 record, as well as a second straight trip to the state tournament and their third appearance in the last four summers.
