After a spectacular summer, two of the Washington Demons’ top softball players are receiving some of the highest accolades, as sisters Leighton and Bella Salazar have been named all-state in Class 3A by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.
Leighton Salazar is a second-team all-state selection for a second straight season, as the sophomore continues to rewrite the Washington record books.
In addition to setting a new single-season record for the program with 36 stolen bases, Salazar again led the Demons with 66 total hits, a .524 batting average and 54 runs scored. The sophomore also had 10 doubles, three triples and 29 runs batted in.
Bella Salazar receives a third-team choice in her first all-state nod. The junior pitcher had a 13-8 record but also put up career bests with a 2.67 earned-run average and the first 100-strikeout season of her career.
But Salazar was also a force with the bat, hitting .348 with 37 RBI, a top-20 total in the state in Class 3A. Bella Salazar hit five doubles and a triple to help propel Washington to 24 wins and a spot in the regional semifinals for a second straight year.
