The Sigourney Savages spent their summer capturing the first softball state championship in school history, and it’s no surprise that four players who led the way to that monumental achievement receive honors of their own after being named all-state in Class 1A by the Iowa Girls Coaches Association.

In addition to the players who received accolades, Sigourney head coach Shelly Streigle was named the Class 1A Coach of the Year. In addition to guiding the Savages to their first-ever appearance in a state title game and the win, Streigle led the team to a fourth straight South Iowa Cedar League championship and their third trip to state in that time.

For a fourth straight year, pitcher Carly Goodwin is an all-state selection for Sigourney, making first-team All-Class 1A for a third straight season. Goodwin capped her legendary career with another dominant season, going 24-2 in the circle, allowing just a minuscule 0.36 earned-run average and racking up 361 strikeouts.

But Goodwin wasn’t just top five in the state in virtually every pitching statistic. The senior also had the best season of her career as a hitter, putting up a .500 batting average, 14 doubles, seven home runs, 40 runs batted in and 30 runs scored on her way to reaching 200 career hits.

Junior Josephine Moore has picked up her third straight all-state nod after making the first team for a second straight summer. The catcher swung a mighty bat, hitting .390 with 11 homers and 40 RBI.

Junior Ava Fisch receives her first career all-state selection after she batted .367 and scored a team-high 33 runs for the Savages while also playing elite defense at second base.

An honorable mention all-state choice for the Savages is outfielder Ava Fineran. Despite just a .233 average at the plate, the senior not only played great defense, but she delivered the biggest hit of her career.

Fineran came up with a two-out, two-run single in the top of the seventh to take Sigourney from down 2-1 to in front of Martensdale-St Marys in the state championship game and was also rewarded for her efforts with a spot on the All-State Tournament team alongside Moore and Goodwin.
