At KCII, we’re continuing to count down the top 10 sports stories at Washington High School in the 2023-2024 academic year. At number five is Josh Anderson and Ryen Pepper winning medals at the Class 3A state track and field championships.

Among the 37 athletes who represented the Demons on the famed blue oval of Drake University Stadium, Anderson and Pepper would be the two to bring home the hardware at the state meet.

Josh Anderson was looking to add to an already impressive trophy case after he won three state medals in his debut season, and the sophomore did just that. In addition to finishing in second place in the 100-meter wheelchair race, Anderson was fifth in the wheelchair shot put and third in both the 200 and 400 meters.

Meanwhile, Ryen Pepper capped off a brilliant season for Washington girls’ track by finishing fourth in the 400-meter hurdles. A runner-up at the Southeast Conference championships and at state qualifying in the event, Pepper helped the Demons win their first team conference title since 1979 as well as the state qualifying meet.
