New news about a Kalona landmark was shared at the most recent meeting of the Kalona City Council. August 5th, The city was awarded a $100,000 Community Catalyst Building Remediation Grant by the Iowa Economic Development Authority for the city-owned Kalona Bakery Building at 209 5th Street, Kalona. The property is owned in a joint agreement by both the city and Kalona Cooperative Technology Company (KCTC). This grant, which was accepted by council, allows plans to move forward with a buyer and developer in the future.
The building has been vacant since a June 2016 fire. The City approved the purchase of the building with KCTC in the spring of 2019.
