Just after 11p.m. Wednesday, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office attempted to execute a traffic stop on a Yamaha Sports Motorcycle near Ireland Avenue Northwest and the Interstate 80 West Bound off ramp in Tiffin. According to authorities, the motorcycle driver, 33-year-old Joseph Halstead of Wellman, refused to stop and accelerated away from the pursuing deputy. Halstead continued through Tiffin, westbound on Highway 6, at speeds in excess of 100mph. After turning southbound on Highway 109 toward Oxford, Halstead lost control and crashed near South Augusta Avenue and 295th Street Northwest near Oxford. Agencies performed lifesaving measures on Halstead, but he was pronounced dead on scene. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

Authorities on scene included the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office, Iowa State Patrol, Johnson County Ambulance Service, Oxford Fire Department, University of Iowa AirCare, Johnson County Medical Examiner and Johnson County Joint Emergency Communications Center.
