The final preseason tune-up for the Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk football team happens tonight when the Hawks travel to West Liberty clash with the Comets. Mid-Prairie is coming off of a 5-5 season, and a 4-1 runner-up finish in Class 2A, District 5. The Hawks posted a 49-18 playoff win over Northeast Goose Lake in the opening round before falling in the second round at Prairie City Monroe in 2023. It was a Golden Hawk team that finished in the top 10 of Class 2A in 21 different team and individual categories, 18 of those on the offensive side of the ball. They also reached the top 10 in Mid-Prairie history in four different offensive categories. Ten different Golden Hawks were named All-District, five of which return, quarterback Brady Weber, offensive linemen Landon Kos and Conner Wiles, linebacker Kaden Kos and running back and district offensive MVP Hudson Ehrenfelt.
West Liberty went 1-7 a season ago, beating West Burlington Notre Dame 27-7 for their only victory. They were outscored 293-97 in total on the year. The Comets return leading passer Ryker Dengler, who went for 1,609 yards through the air, eight touchdowns and 10 picks last season. Top tackler Cameron Iske is back after 31 stops a season ago.
Action starts tonight at 6p.m. At West Liberty High School.
