On Tuesday morning, Stewart Elementary Staff detected smoke and smelled burning plastic in a classroom within the first-grade wing at Stewart School in Washington. In response, they immediately evacuated the affected wing and safely moved all students outside. The Washington Fire Department arrived promptly and determined that an AC unit malfunction in one classroom caused the issue. After a thorough inspection, they received clearance from the Washington Fire Department and Alliant Energy to re-enter the first-grade wing. As a precaution, the students from the affected classroom have been relocated to another room within the building while repairs are being completed. TRANE, the School District HVAC contractor, was scheduled to work on the malfunctioning unit Tuesday to ensure everything is functioning properly.
