A local 4-H exhibitor was on the big stage in Des Moines for the 42nd Annual Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair. Kate Totemeier of Columbus Junction is a member of the Cloverleaf 4-H Club in Louisa County and was sponsored by the District 20 Cattlemen’s Association and Louisa County Cattlemen. The Columbus Junction 12-year-old was joined in the ring by a celebrity showman, Iowa State University two-time NCAA National Champion wrestler David Carr. She raised more than $41,000 for the event. Totemeier and Carr were the People’s Choice Award Winners of the show, awarded to the team that earns the loudest applause from the crowd. This year, there were 24 total participants. Last year’s event raised over a half million dollars, and since its inception in 1983, the Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer show has raised over $5 million. Proceeds are donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa.
