Around 11:30p.m. Wednesday, the Jefferson County Communications Center received a call regarding a structure fire at 51 S 12th St in Fairfield. Units from the Fairfield Fire Department, Fairfield Police Department, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Jefferson County Ambulance responded to the call for service. Upon entry into the residence, the remains of one deceased individual were located inside.. The remains were sent to the lowa Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy to determine the cause of death. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
